Pro Tip
Pause at mid-span for the best waterfall photo—sunsets here are especially striking.
After just one look at the 345 foot long, 12 foot wide, and 8 inches thick bridge suspending high above Falls Park on the Reedy River, it may be hard to believe that the construction of this project only took 12 months! Constructed by Taylor and Murphy Construction Co. of Asheville, NC, designed by bridge architect Miquel Rosales of Boston, and engineered by Schlaich Bergermann, the beautifully crafted bridge is described to be “floating on air.” The concrete, reinforced deck of the Liberty Bridge is supported by just a single suspension cable (daunting, right?) But don’t worry! The strength of the bridge is truly unmatched as the cable systems that work with and against each other support the bridge and hold its miraculous curvature. You may be familiar with similar structural work built in Europe, but Greenville’s Liberty Bridge is a one-of-a-kind creation, and you simply cannot find anything else like it in the United States. It’s hard not to miss this breathtaking structure in the center of downtown Greenville. It draws in countless visitors every year to experience the vantage point of Falls Park like no other. From panoramic views of the numerous gardens and rushing waterfall below to the bustling city scene, all while getting from one side of the bridge to another, you will soon be able to tell why the Liberty Bridge is a visitor’s favorite!
